I wanted to add USB 3.0 ports to an old Dell laptop. After failing with the cheapest adapter I could find, I decided to spend a few more dollars on a StarTech.com ExpressCard adapter. The StarTech block worked without any problems. I suspected that the USB wireless adapter's bottleneck was the USB 2.0 port it was plugged into. When connected via USB 2.0, I achieved a download speed of 175 Mbps. With the same adapter plugged into the StarTech adapter's USB 3.0 port, the download speed increased to 270 Mbit/s. Adding USB 3.0 ports via an ExpressCard adapter is much cheaper than buying a new laptop.
