Review on Steelex D1091 Sharpening Stone Holder for Ultimate Precision by Terry Wilson

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Maintainable and not overpriced

After reading the reviews I half expected I'd have to tap a thread to make this thing work. I didn't, worked by just finding it out of the box and it's big enough to fit the King KDS water stone which is a pretty good stone. People who complain about rubber smell obviously have never been to a tire shop, that's what it smells like. I struggled to give it 4 stars. I have a feeling the item was slightly misrepresented in the description as at the time of purchase the description said the screws were chrome plated. The box also says chrome plating and shows nice and shiny screws. The bolts aren't even "galvanized," they look more like hot-dip galvanized. To their credit they have changed the description to indicate they are galvanized but the picture still shows the beautiful shiny studs if the finish is closer to that of the chain link fence. Not that there's anything wrong with that, they probably actually last longer before rusting than shiny coated screws. It's just not accurate. Although I have to give them one star for misrepresenting the product, at least they went back and corrected the description on their product page. But overall the value is good. It's cheaply made and if I were a professional sushi chef at a three star Michelin restaurant in Ginza I would buy something better. But for my use and my expectations it will be very good.

Pros
  • Galvanized steel parts resist rusting when used with waterstones
Cons
  • Only available in black
