I have a 75 gallon Revain tank and have long wanted to increase the size of my biofilter. I'm tired of washing up and replacing the bio-sponge. After studying fluidized beds, I realized that this is the easiest way to increase biological filtration and that structurally they are really perfect. The only problem I had was that for a 75 gallon tank I would either spend a ton of money buying a larger rig or need a few units in the tank in the tank. I bought two of these. for less than $40 total and decided to play with them to see what could be done with their combination. Since they are slightly larger at the top than at the bottom, they cannot be stacked; Instead, I used my Dremmel to cut out the underside of one of the tops. Then, using the grinding functions, I was able to remove some of the burrs in the tape so I could put the adjusted end on another piece of equipment. The result is a sleeve for combining tops. With the help of a small amount of underwater tape, the center was installed. I also removed the sponge from the "top floor” and put an underwater tape in its place, forming a cap with a cut out part (so the bubbles come together in one place). I also cut the bottom lip in half to increase flow. Then, with the stuff inside, I hooked up the lower air hose bracket to a fairly powerful air pump, and using the air hose I attached the upper air hose bracket to the surface skimmer outlet aerator tie-in. So the skimmer's power head was pulling power from top to bottom. I liked the result! The water is now only slightly cloudy from all the aeration from the other hydrohead. The water is very clear and mature, the armored catfish tendrils are long (i.e. without nitrates) and the pool looks healthier. at least in front). These fluid bed filters really do their job and cost half what I would have to pay for a filter of the same size. I recommend this device as its simplicity and looks are more than reasonable for the price.
