The refurbished router I received was actually an R6300v2 sold by Charter and running the original Netgear Firmware has been flashed. There is nothing wrong with that, since it is exactly the same equipment. It works just like the R6300v2 sold directly by Netgear. If you want to flash custom firmware like ddwrt, you need to know that it was originally a charter model. You can verify if your model is a charter by checking the sticker affixed below the original label. If the original tag has an SSID, such as MyCharterWiFi, then you have a charter.
