These filters are dated but they work. At the same time, they are very efficient and consume little energy compared to make-up filters. With some filters, if there is a power failure, they lose their charge, if there is a power failure, they settle and run dry without water. These will not. They do have a couple of downsides: they take up space in the aquarium and this can get your hands wet when you have to clean them. They are cheaper to run and a good air pump will work with several of these filters. I have one complaint about these filters, they have molded plastic tabs on the exhaust pipe to keep the air duct in place. They are fairly easy to break which means you have to use an air stone or weight the air stone to keep it in the filter. In conclusion, if you don't mind getting your hands wet, I recommend them because they're pretty cheap and the running costs are very low. Those who have multiple aquariums should consider these filters to save on consumables.
