Review on πŸ“Ά TRENDnet TEW-820AP Black Wireless AC Easy-Upgrader - Upgrade to 5 GHz, Pre-Encrypted, Easy Set-up by Michael Godo

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Everything is OK. Very simple router.

This review is for the Trendnet Wireless AC Easy upgrader. This router leaves a lot to be desired. I only use it as a Wi-Fi client on top of my existing portable router which only supports 2.4GHz when connected to public hotspots. Two major weaknesses: - Doesn't support closed portals. If Wi-Fi requires you to "sign in" first by redirecting to a web page, this router won't work with it. The default IP address of this router is 192.168.10.100. Once connected to an access point, it is no longer "addressable" as it will receive a new IP address from DHCP. BUT, if you happen to connect to a WiFi hotspot with broken DHCP, that router will go into a black hole - you won't be able to address it at all. Once this happens you should move away from the access point - far enough that it can't connect, then it will revert to the default IP address and you can change it to connect somewhere else. Celebration. It only recognizes 5 GHz networks. This router "bridges" your Wi-Fi connection so that there is no firewall between you and the Wi-Fi network you are connected to. This is fine if you want to connect to a local network, but not so good if you're connected to a public network where you need an intermediary firewall.
