You can achieve the same look with a regular marker.
It was pretty easy to use, but basically the same effect as writing with lemon juice on paper held against a lightbulb. The liquid was poured into the fibers of the wood and it was impossible to get a clean, sharp line. It's also not very dark once activated. I could get the same or better result with a drawing pen or a permanent marker.
