Large Caldero Pot Set

PROS I bought these hoping to replace the aging aluminum rice pots I've had for years. The old pots were still in decent condition, but lately I've noticed that rice tends to get stuck in the bottom of the pot. I'm generally skeptical about non-stick pots and pans. They usually work great, but quickly lose their non-stick properties with each use. That being said, it's been over three months since I bought a set of these calderos and I still haven't had any rice stick to the bottom of the pot. I cook rice with almost every meal, so I wanted to make sure every time I bought it was as good, if not better, than what I had. It easily outperformed the old cast aluminum calderos I had, so much so that I stopped adding fat to my rice. Rice cooks perfectly every time, and I have yet to scrape rice off the bottom of a pot. What remains at the bottom of the pot can simply be wiped off with a sponge. The pots look great too. I'm not the type to focus on looks when it comes to utilitarian items. I prefer an ugly pan that cooks well than a nice one that burns while eating. Luckily this one can do both, not only does it cook my food great, it looks good doing it. CONS The following things aren't necessarily bad, but I thought they were worth mentioning. 1) The actual walls of the pan are thinner. than the cast aluminum Caldero I had before. It's worth mentioning because I had to change my cooking method to compensate for the thinner walls. The heat just transfers a lot easier and faster, so I mainly cook in it now and set the temp a little lower. 2) The handles are cast aluminum and the dishwasher hates them. I'm not exactly sure what's causing this, but anything that's die-cast aluminum gets washed and leaves a weird film on it. The film will eventually turn anything used to clean gray. I've tried different detergents and soaps but they all resulted in this weird film at the end of the wash cycle. If you look online, this is a known problem with dishwashers and cast aluminum. That being said, I wish IMUSA hadn't skimped on paint or some sort of silicone coating on the grips. In this way they at least protect the metal from direct contact with what will ever leave a wear film on it when washed in the dishwasher. I'll probably put a few coats of high temp paint on the grips myself. Overall I am happy with my new Caldero pans; The price is reasonable but the quality is excellent.

Pros
  • Absolutely stunning!
Cons
  • Not bad, but...
