Revainrating 4 out of 5

Outstanding functionality; Mediocre design; The back is not flat

Long summary: This remote works well and I'm glad I have it. EDIT June 10, 2021: I am updating this review to report a battery change. The remote I bought and tested just over a year ago becomes quite erratic when the battery dies. Although the unit came with a CR-2025 battery (and a spare), I found the 0.7mm thick CR-2032 battery (also 3V) was a better fit and lasted longer. Also, the device pictured today and recently reviewed by others is clearly a redesigned design from what I received and reviewed (you can tell from the photos). The guy who got rid of the strap and attached the remote to his console next to the main unit couldn't do this with the old unit I bought in April 2020. this ATOTO remote for a few days and like other reviewers have said I wish I had bought it sooner. I particularly missed having a proper volume knob on the main unit, so I'm glad this remote's volume knob is a dial around the face. All buttons on the front of the remote work well (and with useful functions). Why not 5 stars? In the hope that ATOTO product management will read these reviews, here is my hopefully constructive wish list for future changes. I would like to be able to rotate the orientation of the face depending on the chosen installation position. Where I installed the remote, the front rotates 90 degrees clockwise. I'll get used to this alignment pretty quickly, so it's not a problem. The construction feels a little flimsy - at least one reviewer mentioned that the strap snapped during installation. So I was extra careful when trying to find the best mounting location in my car. Twisting the volume knob feels a bit loose and unhooked (although it works well enough). Also, although the product description says "with backlit keys", there is no backlight - the keys are made of yellow-greenish glow-in-the-dark silicone rubber (to me, this inaccuracy in the product info is more of a translation error than a hoax, as some have argued). reviewers complained). I would like more assembly flexibility. Possibly a detachable strap with some surface mount options. Without thinking much before ordering, I assumed the back of the main body is flat, like a wristwatch. I suggested that if needed I could remove the strap and use "reusable glue" like this Uhu Tac proPower stuff I had on hand (https://www.amazon.com/UHU-Tac-PROPower -pads-48680/dp /B0085T0G2K/ ) to firmly but temporarily attach the remote control to the most convenient surface. But the back isn't flat like a wristwatch (see side profile picture attached to this review). My mount choice: I just don't like it when something on my handlebars interferes with my grip and distracts me while riding. This is especially true of this remote when set up as intended, as wriggling your hands around the wheel while steering is likely to cause the volume wheel to spin violently (thereby increasing the distraction). So I decided to mount the remote on the top left "spoke" of the steering wheel as close as possible to the inside of the wheel where the thickness of the spoke quickly expands like a funnel into the horn/airbag hub. . I was able to position the outer part of the volume control about 1cm inside the steering wheel to avoid turning the volume control unintentionally while steering. I actually used some of the gray reusable glue putty I mentioned earlier to create a layer under the console in the thinner part of the spoke to keep it from slipping out. Glue putty is ugly, but damn, I've got a black and glow-in-the-dark plastic thing firmly attached to my leather steering wheel now, so form follows function.

Pros
  • Stylish and modern design
Cons
  • Good but not great
