Useful moisture meter

I bought this moisture meter because I really need to know the moisture level of my plants. I'm new to growing a plant and really haven't figured out how to use the weight of the pot to determine how moist the soil is. I also can't get my fingers into the soil deep enough to know how dry or wet it really is. I have used this gauge and it has been so helpful. I just put the counter in the middle of the pot, not the edges, and always clean the stakes between and after each plant.
