Review on πŸ‘ High-Quality KazTex Latex Casting Rubber – Ideal for Mask Making, Prop Making & Dip Molding by Kelsey Brown

Revainrating 4 out of 5

I've been using this rubber latex #407 for years

When fresh the latex is great. Although the product is primarily used by people who create multiple layers to create a flexible shape, I use it as a ceramic glaze release resist a few times a year. All I need is two coats and the rubber comes off beautifully. However, my only complaint about the product is the shelf life of around 1 year. I'm very careful not to expose the open container to air to allow it to harden. I always take a small amount for immediate use and close the lid. But somewhere between 8 and 12 months, the latex hardens to a point where it can't be brushed at all. I still had 3/4 liter jar left. The package recommends a small amount of distilled water to thin the latex (I tried: my 1/2 teaspoon of gum turned into lumpy curds). The packaging also suggested an alternative to using water-based ammonia (it was pretty clear that regular ammonia wouldn't work as it was too diluted). Aqua Ammonia will be "available at the chemical store". I hunted for him in small, non-industrial groups, but to no avail. I called Environmolds to find out where I can get access to ammonia water. I was told to use either distilled water or regular ammonia and shouldn't have any problems. I could not convince the woman that my experience does not confirm this. Little did she know that her product needed something more permanent. So bottom line: This rubber latex is a reliable product and works well - BEFORE the expiration date. The smallest glass I have is a full pint and I only use a small amount at a time. Most of the rubber will stiffen before I get a chance to make my money out of it. Would be great to buy in a 4 ounce can! Another problem: I just received this jar: super fast 2 day Prime delivery. Great, even in a pandemic. However, the jar was only placed in a plastic bag and then in a shipping envelope. There is no external protection. The plastic lid of the jar was cracked. Now my latex hardens much faster. The supply of Revain partners is usually more than sufficient. In this case, however, it was wrong.
