Review on Alpicool Portable Refrigerator Vehicle Freezer by Djuan Thompson

Revainrating 5 out of 5

works fine until it shuts down and freezes.

PROS: Inexpensive, efficient chilling/freezing, quiet, low power consumption, battery protection seems to set the temperature set point quite well, comes with 110V and 12V adapters CONS: Poor insulation, extremely inaccurate temperature measurements. PROBLEMS: Worked fine for a few months, and then last weekend it wouldn't turn off and everything froze. I couldn't stop it with the power button, I had to turn it off. I read a few other reviews with similar issues so I wasn't totally surprised. Haven't checked the warranty yet. I can use an external power relay and a separate thermostat. CONTEXT: I always have this in my car powered by a 12v deep cycle battery charged by a 100w solar panel system. This refrigerator has a lot of power. It draws 2.5 amps in Eco mode and 3.5 amps in Hi mode. The starting current is 3.5/4: eco/high. I recommend the "Eco" mode, it is also more accurate. Also, put Styrofoam or carpet on top for insulation, and grab a high/low digital fridge thermometer to make sure your food isn't going bad while you're not looking. I'll see if I can update once I've resolved the issue. UPDATE: 1. I found the "secret" settings posted by another reviewer. 2. After experimenting, the 17°F setting seems to keep my food at around 34°F. (I only use it as a fridge). In the summer, solar power can't keep it running. Now I just turn the fridge on 15 minutes before I need it and turn it off when I'm done. It has quirks but I think it was a good price when I bought it for $199 and it continued to work in its mode with no other issues. I'm wondering if the solar controller low voltage was too close and turning the fridge on/off causing the relay to latch. Just a theory. If you bought two, one as a fridge and one as a freezer, I don't think anything can match the price.
