Review on Sargent Art 90 4000 12X16 Inch Canvas by Carrie Spencer

A big step forward for art students

I recently decided to start oil painting and for the last 6 months I have been reading books, watching drawing videos and practicing. Of course, if you're still in learning mode you don't want to buy a lot of expensive wood-stretched canvases, so I used the much cheaper solid canvases that you can buy in bulk. I had a hard time making progress and I think part of that was due to the poor painting surface of the cheap canvases. When I used the more expensive stretched canvases I could see better results. However, my work is pretty raw at this point, which is why I hated spending so much money on a stretched canvas. Then I discovered linen pillows. I find this to be a great compromise between hard canvas panels and fully stretched canvases. They have great texture and the backing of the pad is very stiff making them easy to place and control on the easel. Sargent pads are one of my favorite canvas pad brands. If you manage to get a good picture, you can also tape a sheet of canvas to a hard board for framing, which again is better than trying to work with canvas boards mounted on hard paper. Try it, I think you will like this product.
