We used to have picnics on blankets or beach towels. It's much better. It is really light and compact, reaching a large size (with cheerful colors) when folded. Repels water, sand and dirt. If you made a big mess (like a jar of jam), just hose it off when you get home. It does not absorb water and therefore dries almost immediately. The synthetic has a woven structure and therefore offers limited protection in wet ground and little protection in mud. It handles wet grass very well. Folding back is a bit like folding a card - you have to understand how it works or you won't get the Velcro lined up correctly (which in itself isn't usually a big problem).
