I've had a Garmin RV-785 for less than a week and haven't used it on a long trip yet (first one will be in a few days) but wanted some Pass on first observations after use in the city, test routing and DVR. I also used BaseCamp to plan our upcoming trip and will comment a bit on that as well. Travel planning seems accurate, if a bit awkward to use. I should add that I have no experience with any other route planning software or GPS device other than Google Maps. I personally found BaseCamp easier to plan and modify a route after spending some time figuring out the program's interface and how to get a ready route in the RV-785.2. The DVR, one of the main reasons for buying this model, is not as good as I had hoped. The relatively narrow field of view compared to other DVRs available is disappointing, although it will probably be ok. A more disturbing aspect of the camera is the very noticeable "jelly effect" in the recorded video. I'm using the included suction cup windshield mount with magnetic device mount, so I don't see how to mount the device more tightly to reduce the effect. The video also has an instant break, probably just a frame or two a minute or so. I haven't actually checked to determine the interval or see if it's random or not, but it's noticeable. I did not test the camera in low light conditions or when driving at night.3. Forward collision and lane departure warnings work, although lane departure warnings will not activate when the lane boundary is a dashed line or when the road is curved (at least in my limited experience). I'll be testing these features more extensively on our upcoming journey. Since this model is Android-based and has a built-in web browser, it would be nice if links placed at points of interest were active links that open a webpage in the browser, but perhaps that criticism should be directed at POI providers rather than Garmin. Integration with Google Earth would also be a plus! Right now I'm planning to keep the unit and possibly change this rating after our upcoming trip of about 1600 miles. We're not using specific RV features yet, but will report observations of those features if/when we do.
