Terribly inaccurate!

Two trips in our new caravan and it has misled us at least 3 times. Should go to Charleston KOA, chose KOA right on the screen - we were literally in a small area of Charleston and it announces "KOA on your left" which was an apartment building. I had to use google maps on my phone several times because I don't trust them. Too much money for something so inaccurate.

Watch out for strange events and find out the return date

Larger screen; I just got a replacement and I like the screen much better even though it's the exact same model number.; The first sometimes didn't respond to a voice command; showed outrageously long, cumbersome routes in faster mode; The odd speed changes by 15 miles when going straight and levering. All of a sudden, without my input or touch, the screen switches to stats or posts sidebar information. Hope the new one behaves well before the return date. Lots of new screens to learn about…

Doesn't work with Mac and Base Camp - UPDATE

Simply Worst hardware ever purchased from Garmin. Mostly useless for trip planning as it can't transfer trips from Garmin base camp to it. I've been a fan of Garmin devices for many years. Time to look for another brand that can actually be used. So disappointed. It is very necessary for the upcoming journey. After several hours of work and a call to Garmin support, it really does work, just unlike previous devices. The problem and the secret is making sure Garmin Express isn't running in the…

Routes are where they should be and full of extras

Have you ever been driven or offered to drive down a road you shouldn't take; even if set in height, length etc.? This one doesn't. Since we've had the Boeing 785, we've traveled to many destinations to make sure it doesn't take us over dangerous roads, low bridges, driveways and walls, or get stuck in a loop like we did. This even outperformed the routing of some websites. So we love it. We will still check the maps but we will be sure of this GPS. The camera, lane keeping feature and…

  • Consistent test results

Not ready for prime time

This RV GPS is a mixed bag. I would have sent it back if I found any imperfections, but I was traveling and couldn't find the packaging. My previous Garmin devices were much better at marking lanes - I missed a turn in the St. Louis turbulence where ramps diverge from both sides everywhere. This device also can't tell which lane I'm in - it even shows me on the interstate if I'm more than 50 feet away on the front road. It's just not as accurate as other units. I've also found that all the…

First impressions and observations

I've had a Garmin RV-785 for less than a week and haven't used it on a long trip yet (first one will be in a few days) but wanted some Pass on first observations after use in the city, test routing and DVR. I also used BaseCamp to plan our upcoming trip and will comment a bit on that as well. Travel planning seems accurate, if a bit awkward to use. I should add that I have no experience with any other route planning software or GPS device other than Google Maps. I personally found BaseCamp…

Pros
  • This is amazing

  • Requires a power outlet

Useful for towing a large RV, but still has its downsides.

Edit - Added photos of the homemade Garmin mount to mount on my F150. I owned an old Garmin device for several years (before it was pulled out of my newly smashed car window) and loved how it worked since mobile phone navigation was still in its infancy at the time. This unit was purchased solely for navigating a conventional 30ft trailer. I like the magnetic base which didn't drop the device for the first 500 miles of the ride. The passenger can simply remove the device from this base and find

So far, so good! About GPS, Finder & Accessories

I wanted an RV GPS with a built in DVR so I had my eye on the dezlCam 785 but ended up buying the RV 780 and dedicated DVR just before the RV 785 hit the market came. I was able to return the RV 780 as I was within 30 days of purchase. (DezlCam is pronounced "diesel cam" and is for trucker.) The only bug so far is that I've turned off all notifications in the Garmin Drive app, but new emails and texts are popping up on the RV 785. (I have another device that runs on Garmin Drive and respects…
