Overall, it's very handy to see how easy it is to scan with this little thing. Click the scan button, swipe the image, then click scan again and you're done. I have scanned various sheets such as bills and receipts and it has always worked well. Overall I think the scanned images are very good and much better than other handheld scanners I have used. However, the device has several disadvantages. The battery life is not acceptable. The main problem with battery life is that the batteries need to be almost fully charged for the scanner to work, otherwise the device will just turn itself off. The original batteries that came with the scanner lasted about 10-15 scans for three days before dying. Surprised I put the batteries in the tester and they all said 'Good' but they didn't work in the scanner. I then tried a new Duracell kit, which again only took 10 scans before it stopped working and again showed Duracell on the charger as 'Good'. I currently use Energizer rechargeable batteries, but they need to be fully charged overnight before they can be used. Even if you wait a day or two, the batteries will die and the scanner will not work. The company should make the best internal battery for the device. I would gladly sacrifice size and weight for a longer battery. The device cannot be powered from the USB port of the computer. When the scanner is plugged into a USB port, it can scan directly to a Windows computer using a USB cable, but that doesn't work the way I normally use the scanner. IRISCan uses what is known as Scan Direct, which allows the user to scan directly into Windows Paint and other applications such as Word. This prevents the user from directly scanning and viewing images such as JPEG or PDF in a folder. Also, not all scanners save images to a memory card when connected to a computer via USB. Although not mentioned anywhere on the packaging or materials, the scanner will work when powered from a wall outlet. I used the included USB cable and a universal USB outlet adapter to plug it into an outlet. The cable is a bit annoying, but works very well. The scanner loses its timestamp settings when the batteries are changed. This is annoying as you have to change the batteries every day. You could at least put a small watch battery to store the timestamp settings. Other settings such as image color, resolution, and file type must be adjusted each time the scanner is powered off. I generally prefer 600 dpi black and white scans. Since the scanner defaults to a color resolution of 300dpi, I have to manually adjust it every time the scanner is turned on again. Overall, this device scans quickly and well, and I plan to keep it. I can deal with the shortcomings, but I hope that future models will have a better battery and the ability to save timestamps and scan settings.
