For my first monopod, I decided on something inexpensive to decide how useful I would find the monopod. Having never used a monopod I can't compare it to any of the more expensive monopods over $100 but it seems decent especially for the price. It seems solid enough that I can't find anything wrong with it. At the very least, this should give me an inexpensive way to learn how to use a monopod, and if it can withstand prolonged wear, all the better. I haven't tried it with a big heavy lens. I have a relatively heavy camera body (Nikon D7000 + full AA battery pack) but so far I've only used it with my Nikkor Micro 40mm which is almost as light as a lens without a pinhole cap can go. I bought this along with the Giottos professional mini ball head camera mount which seems like a reasonable combo with a monopod, although I suspect the ball will have trouble sliding if it gets too heavy. But not bad for the price. I wouldn't want to use this monopod without some sort of pan/tilt mechanism like this, so if in doubt I'd recommend getting a cheap ball head like this.
