If you're looking to buy this item you seriously need to put a "filter layer" between two solid plates as most other reviewers have suggested. When used as directed by the manufacturer, hardened clumps of dirt get stuck in the filter holes and cleaning becomes a nightmare. (Check out the picture of what 2 cats can do in 2.5 days when I had to leave town for a last minute treatment.) If you place them like this: Upper fixed pan + filter mat Lower fixed pan The cleaning is very simple, almost no inconvenience. Simply lift the top bowl with litter and manure, dump the debris into the stacked Filter+Solid bowls, then lift the filter bowl and shake gently to collect all debris. Clean bedding falls into the bottom tray. Discard the nuggets and stack the pans again, this time the bottom one becomes the top one!
