General 6B Super soft charcoals produce very deep, rich blacks, but you can get a good range on the darker side of the gray scale. with them too. I love the feel of these pens as they glide across soft textured paper. You can mix and match them for many beautiful painterly effects, but they also allow you to create bold, sharp lines and darker details. I want box 12 now! The two I bought are quite small. One thing you need to know is not to be rough when sharpening them. I could use my pencil sharpener but I didn't press the pencil too hard or twist the handle too fast. Just use the tips of your index and thumb to hold your pencil and sharpener, and being good at sharpening a craft knife really helps. It didn't work for me, but the pencils held up pretty well to my clumsy attempts, so I wasted very little pencil. I have other brands of charcoal pencils and I can say that General pencils are the best of them all.
