Terrible brakes didn't become terrible brakes.

That made terrible brakes not terrible brakes. Center pull brakes can't compete with V-brakes, but I think the modulation is probably better. I set rear lock and max braking WITHOUT front lock on dry pavement. Your results may vary and you must consider the surface you are riding on. If you find yourself in mud or water, you can release the front brake a bit. Locking up the front wheel is no fun, especially when cornering.
