Review on KYB KG5554 Gas A Just Gas Shock by Brady Shayotovich

Not compatible with w126/c126 - Never buy KYB again!

Absolute scrap on my Mercedes w126. I fitted my 560sel (against all the advice from the Mercedes forums) with a set of KYB front shocks and was pleasantly surprised at how smooth it was to drive. They felt a bit stiffer than the soft Bilstein b4 shocks, which is exactly what I was looking for. My opinion of KYB changed for the better, and when it came time to replace the rear shocks I decided to stick with it. That was absolutely the worst mistake I could have made. While the front end has been redesigned to look more like a modern car, the rear shocks have made the car extremely springy and even feel unsafe in some conditions. After some research I know exactly what is wrong. The stock Bilstein B4 (soft ride) developed for my car is the exact same unit called HD Shock (hard/hard ride) on the much lighter Mercedes w123. People often use them on the w123 if they regularly carry a lot of weight in their cars or if they need a tougher ride. Well if you look at this part in relation to the w123 it is listed as a standard replacement for ride quality. Not overwhelmed. This tells me that this is a standard replacement shock for the w123 (maybe even a good one, I don't know) and that it's not designed for heavier w126/c126 chassis like my 560sel and 500sec. No wonder why my car bounces on the road. I feel it is very dishonest for KYB to advertise this part as compatible with my vehicles when it clearly is not. I will never buy parts from them in the future and I will do my best to discourage others in the classic Mercedes community from using their brand. astronomical loss. However, the exchange is not easy and I had to remove the rear seat to complete the exchange. I'm definitely not looking forward to retiring them.

Pros
  • shock absorber
Cons
  • boring packaging
