Great black, no hair damage but use common sense!

Godrej Kali Mehendi is a popular hair dye from a highly respected Indian company. Henna is added for conditioning, but the black color comes from the oxidizing dye paraphenylaminodiamine (PPD). However, when this product is diluted according to package directions, the PPD percentage is 3%. This is well below the 6% maximum PPD percentage allowed by the European Union. This also corresponds to the level of PPD in commercial black hair dyes sold at retail. This product is safe unless you are allergic to PPD. But as with any retail hair coloring, you need to use common sense. EACH time you use the product, do a patch test a full 48 hours before coloring. Avoid this product if you have a known allergy to PPD, e.g. B. if you had an adverse reaction to a temporary "black henna” tattoo you got while on vacation. So why use this product at all? This is a safer alternative for your hair to the commercial perms you might otherwise use, which contain the same if not more percentage of PPD as well as peroxide and possible ammonia developing agents. The packaging clearly states which PPD is present and at what percentage. The packaging does not indicate that the black color is due to natural ingredients added to enhance the caring properties. I agree with the other review that the product description should say "contains PPD" - with all the interest in natural hair coloring these days, the consumer will assume this is an all herbal product unless otherwise stated. I don't think the manufacturer is trying to mislead the consumer as it is common knowledge in India that "black henna" is not pure henna but contains PPD. Product description needs to be updated for US consumers. I have safely used this product after a 48 hour patch test. I did a strand test to make sure the color suits me. Got a very nice deep black color without damaging the hair which is still shiny and soft. I donned gloves and tried to minimize skin contact as I would with any commercial hair dye. Wash off any drips on skin immediately with soap and on countertops with bleach (this product will stain. Mix product as directed, apply and leave on for 30 minutes, rinse with cold water until clear, then shampoo and condition. I will use it I will be testing the product again but will do a patch test whenever I am happy with the results compared to what I got with the indigo/henna mix (which was originally black but too reddish tones) If you want to dye your hair black with natural henna alone, this will not happen with this product or with any pharmacy that recommends this product.
