This microscope has no illumination, so you cannot see through objects like you can with a laboratory microscope. However, it does a great job of expanding a child's view of the world by magnifying everything. And for a junior scientist, my grandson is 6 1/2, that's enough. He carefully examined insects, rocks, leaves, almost anything he could reach. The ability to connect to a computer screen is great. In a year or two he will be ready to explore the microscopic world. It's just perfect to look at the lizard's teeth now!
