From other reviews I noticed that the slick surface of the spreader made it difficult to pick up masa, so I figured out how to rough it up a bit when it came time to use those . The first time I washed the spatula, I used a Magic Eraser sponge and gently buffed the surface to make it a little less shiny. I had no problem finding a good piece of masa to spread it on. Also, some have said that you need to be a certain bowl size to spread, but I had no problem spreading the bowl wider than the spreader itself. I know the demo video shows the use of a specific sized bowl, but if you enjoy making large tamales like I do, then this one will do. Just use a lighter hand when spreading so you don't make dents with the guides on either side. It worked great to make 100+ tamales in just a few hours instead of spending all day scooping them out with a spoon. What an ingenious invention!
