The only instruction is on the pump with an arrow clearly indicating which direction the fuel is flowing. So connect the hose or pipe that goes to the carburetor (I connected the fuel filter directly to the pump and then to this hose). However, the filter is also hooked in at the bottom of the pump, I decided to hang it at the top. It has some nice parts, but there are also some torn ones, like the white teflon tape that is terribly wound on one thread instead of two, which is NOT for petrol. I replaced it with yellow teflon tape which is for gas. I didn't use crappy fasteners because they leaked fuel when tested. I ended up using vise clamps (from my parts stash) and that put an end to the leaks. Oh, don't overtighten the fuel filter or it might fall apart when you try to remove it.
