I've had my BackTrack for almost 2 months now. Once you master the functions of the 2 control buttons, it will be very easy to operate them. It's pretty accurate in determining your saved location. I did a test and saved some space in the middle of the front lawn. I turned the device off and then back on while standing in the driveway a few feet from the house. BackTrack correctly determined that my saved location was about 5 meters away from me and pointing in the right direction. It helps if you are reasonably aware of your surroundings and can use common sense along with the information displayed by BackTrack to find your saved location. I wouldn't rely too much on which way the directional arrow is pointing. When attempting to return to a saved location, the directional arrow does not always show the exact direction of your saved location. If you remember that the directional indication isn't accurate, you'll find that BackTrack works quite well. The compass function works similar to the bearing display. When using a compass, the directional arrow usually points north. If an accurate compass is important to you, you might want to take an old-fashioned magnetic compass with you. Here are some important things to keep in mind when using BackTrack. Each time the device is turned on, its back should be parallel to the ground. If you hold it like a compass, then lower your hand to walk, and then raise the device again, your readings are likely to be inaccurate. Once the device is powered off, you can rotate it to any orientation without sacrificing accuracy. I made the mistake of not accidentally turning off the device before putting it in my pocket. When I took it out again and turned it on, the compass rotated 180 degrees. If you find that the compass is that far off, walk the figure eight pattern a few times and hold the unit level and it should recalibrate itself. If you haven't moved far since you last turned BackTrack on, it won't take long for it to acquire its satellite location. I drove a few hundred miles then turned on the unit and it took about a minute to fix. Despite the disadvantages of BackTrack, I'm happy with it. For what the device does, the price is unbeatable.
