Decent for the price

It does what it says on the tin and does it well enough considering the price (about $30 at the time of writing). A few caveats: if you're not moving, the direction to your final checkpoint (an arrow on the screen telling you where to go) may not be accurate. This little guy has a crappy compass, so he can tell exactly which direction you're looking based on the differences between your current position and your past positions. The compass (like most cheap electronic compasses that rely on…

Must have GPS in portable GPS navigators

I have two other portable GPS navigators but this is the only one I use all the time. When using other modules, I have to keep my directions open, as they are very cumbersome to use. With BackTrack, you just turn it on and off you go. Satellites will be found in minutes and you will be directed to your chosen waypoint. Best of all, you don't have to traverse the path before BackTrack orients itself. Other units require you to follow a good path before they can orient themselves and give precise

Works reasonably well: Portable GPS units

The unit works reasonably well and is easy to carry, especially with the lanyard. I've used it in the woods a few times and it's accurate enough to get you back to your starting point with reasonable accuracy. I only gave it 4 stars because the accuracy of the device is not as accurate as I expected. Don't get me wrong, it gets you close enough to your starting point to get back home, but it's not uncommon to find yourself taking multiple measurements in the same location and getting a slightly

Save Your Money - GPS, Finder & Accessories

I had high hopes for this product and really wish it would work better than it did. trying to make it work. The compass function seemed to drift erratically, and while the distance traveled from my home point seemed accurate enough, when it came time to return, the directional arrow simply floated, shifted, and often pointed in the entirely wrong direction. I read some negative reviews but there were also positive ones so I decided to take a risk. Guilty. After playing with it for a few days to

Bushnell GPS tracker

Web images do not indicate device size. Its diameter is 3 inches, but it is comfortable for an adult to hold in hand. The main goal was to help my wife find a car in a large, crowded parking lot. It is in order. You have to wait for the device to lock onto satellites to mark a car or other location - the initial lock takes too long - typically 30 seconds or more, but once saved and brought out again results in a quick lock. The use in the field will be interesting. Obviously it only offers a…

Questionable quality

I think Bushnell needs to reconsider this point and how they handle complaints. Although I own other GPS devices, I purchased this product due to its small size and despite some bad reviews. I know some people don't bother reading directions (necessary due to GPS devices) and I expected a lot of bad reviews from these people. However, I found that the first problem stemmed from Bushnell's poor instructions that came with the device. There is no mention of moving the device towards the 8 to make

Suitable for city trips

I took a trip to Vietnam in March and April this year. First I tried to find a GPS with maps for this area but it seems there are currently no GPS maps in this country. Since I was planning to take two pieces of luggage that could be used as backpacks (one for me and one for my fiancee), I wanted to travel light. All I needed was a device that could take us back to our hotel and this device did the job. Being in Hanoi we had a rough idea where to go and also took 2 maps. We ended up getting…

Battery cover and arrow problem

As some reviewers have pointed out, the battery cover is a problem, mainly because the instructions don't provide enough information. The two small arrows are roughly opposite the two small dots on the main body. To remove the cap, turn it clockwise about half an inch so that the BACKSIDE of the two arrows are now roughly opposite the two small dots. Now turn the tool right side up. The back cover should fall off. If not, try turning the lid a little more. The total turning movement will not…

The direction indicator is vague - common sense is required.

I've had my BackTrack for almost 2 months now. Once you master the functions of the 2 control buttons, it will be very easy to operate them. It's pretty accurate in determining your saved location. I did a test and saved some space in the middle of the front lawn. I turned the device off and then back on while standing in the driveway a few feet from the house. BackTrack correctly determined that my saved location was about 5 meters away from me and pointing in the right direction. It helps if…
