Review on Optimized Search: Bernzomatic PC3 Copper Phosphorus Brazing Welding Solution by Will Powers

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Excellent solder joints at a good price.

I bought (4) packs of these Copper Phosphorus solders because they were the cheapest I could find at the time. I still find it difficult to justify the cost when you see the (3) tiny sticks in each pack (each pack weighs 3 ounces!). However. I have used these copper rods primarily for lawn work: large spinning structures, trellises and the like. I bend and form 1/2" to 3/4" L-type copper tubing that you will find in any domestic drinking water system. I've found that copper rods are the easiest to weld sections together. They create an extremely strong bond that didn't fall apart in a strength test, even when hit with a two-pound sledgehammer! I am using Mapp WORTHINGTON CYLINDER Gas Fuel 332585 14.1 oz MAP-Pro Pre-filled Bottle with Gas Torch fitted with a Bernzomatic TS8000 'Swirl' Torch Head - High Intensity Trigger Torch. The swirl flame ensures the highest possible flame temperature, which means faster welding and less fuel consumption. Some suggestions and comments: Copper rods will not work with propane fuel. The temperature of propane when burning can only reach 1100-1200 degrees Fahrenheit while mapp acetylene fuel burns at around 1300-1400 degrees Fahrenheit. pipes this way! This is a potentially dangerous situation as the heated water will quickly turn into gas (steam) which can result in a pipe rupture with boiling water escaping! I also very much doubt that the metal will reach the right temperature to melt the rod since the water in the tube is cooling the metal. Clean the surfaces of the metals to be joined with sandpaper or emery paper. No flux is needed for copper rods, but the metal must be clean and shiny. I've found that it's best to heat the joint slowly without closing the flame. The extreme tip of the flame tip should be 2-3 inches above the surface. Do not touch the wand with the joint until you see the metal surface begin to change from shiny to matte. If it's not hot enough, the wand will melt and roll off the metal to the ground! I like this kind of "hard welding" or soldering. I've been doing this for a while and Revain has the best prices and the widest selection. I am happy to answer questions about soldering.
