I bought one of these for my parents. They recently got a new Wi-Fi computer that my dad tends to monopolize. In the winter it's not a big problem because my mom can use the computer next to the router, but in the summer it gets so hot that they can only run the computer in a room with a window air conditioner. They're very illiterate technically, so I took one of them to reduce the chances of her hitting him on the head with a Nerf bat to intercept emails. The installation was performed on the machine with Windows XP. It's really old so I didn't want to use the special install disk that came with it. This is fine if you want to go through setup, but they typically install third-party software that can eat up computer resources. Good news: Without it, there were no installation problems. First, we left the computer connected to the router with an Ethernet cable during this setup. We then simply plugged in the device, which you can do directly or with the supplied USB extension cable if it's too thick, let Windows Update find the right driver for it, clicked on the small WiFi icon next to the clock, you got it Found network, entered password, powered off machine, disabled ethernet and restarted. Everything is ready all the time, maybe 10 minutes. Not bad! So far the signal has been pretty good. The speed is the same as when using a wire. This is true for most people as the slowest part of your network is your ISP. You will most likely have slower file transfers between computers on your own network, but you won't notice any internet slowdown as this adapter should be much faster than your internet speed. Signal strength was good in the same room and a few more rooms down, but depending on what your walls are made of, you can quickly lose signal the further away you go. allows them to move the computer without problems. It consumes a USB port and you probably can't use it with a hub unless that hub has a separate power supply as it draws a lot of power, but as long as your computer's USB port can pump out enough juice it's A LOT easier than opening it cars. It's hard to give you an accurate lifespan estimate, but the one I bought 3-4 years ago for about 3x the price still works, although this one may be slowly dying.
