What I really needed was a light detector that would work with my Homeseer home automation software to automate indoor lighting for comfort and security. Regardless of whether I'm at home or not, the lights in the house turn on at different outside light levels, as if I were at home and it was getting dark inside. I already have a Homeseer ambient light sensor/headlamp control box, but the maximum light level it reports is only 200 lumens, which is pretty dim. While this works well for outdoor lighting, it's practically useless for controlling indoor lights as it's pretty dark outside at 200 lumens. The only other light sensor they sell is this one and they sell it for a higher price but since there really is no other choice I gave it a try. It is a multi-sensor device that measures light, temperature and detects movement. It also has a front light that you can control with Homeseer. The problem is that what I bought for him just doesn't work. It reports that temperature and motion detection is fine, but there are much cheaper Z-Wave sensors that can do this, but when it came to light conditions, they failed completely. It takes a long time to respond to changes in light levels and it never reports the actual level. Even in light conditions where you can still read well, it reports 18% light and zero when I can still see perfectly. To me, zero means dark or candlelight or less, not just below reading light level. That makes it useless for what it claims to be able to do and what I need it for. this is what he deserves. I could just use it as an indicator of when my garage doors are open since no one seems to make an indicator for Z-Wave, or I could just return it. I should look at the last return date and see if it's worth keeping the indicator at $50.
