When I returned to change the tool, the collet nut had cooled, but the spindle threads retained enough heat that a vigorous attempt to loosen the nut around the slightly heat-expanded spindle threads deformed the collet nut, and then tightened the deformation along the entire Thread. thread, severely damaging an essential spindle component. Given a 4-6 week lead time for a new $400 spindle from China, or 1-2 weeks before a $1,000+ domestic replacement, I decided to rethread the spindle with this $40 die that comes inside arrived in two days. 2 excruciatingly stressful hours of thread grinding and a can of WD-40 later, my spindle is back in fighting shape with no vibration. I put in a 1/4 inch tool blank and there is no hesitation. The combs are still damaged but the roots are very clear and clean.
