When my Sony pocket camera died I thought I wanted a slightly larger camera with more features, but friends with big, "real life" cameras convinced me to look for another pocket camera . for easy transport. I have compared many cameras in this "class" and am very happy with my choice of the Canon PowerShot. First, it has so many interesting features for such a small camera that I had a hard time remembering it. everything is available, including many features previously only available in photo editing software, such as fisheye and monochrome. I'll be honest, I'm unlikely to be able to spontaneously use such features for quick baby shots. But if you get a good shot, it'll be interesting to check out these features to see what you can get. Probably the best part is that, despite having a number of manual modes, it has a very nice and efficient full auto mode that corrects pretty much every shot, so that's a good thing. Auto mode introduces some delay in taking a picture, but the results are worth it. Second, the zoom quality is amazing. It has an 8x optical zoom and then up to 30x digital zoom. Playing with it at home, I was amazed at the crisp, close-up shots I was able to get of small objects on the dresser 18 feet away, and even more shots of objects BEHIND ME captured in the dresser mirror! The controls are easy to use and quite intuitive. Some features took a little getting used to as some of them are layered and I couldn't remember how to find them again but after a while it all makes sense. My old Sony had a touchscreen, but I don't miss it at all. Having real buttons was a welcome change as now you can not only see the buttons but also feel them. It's also MUCH easier to view the photos you've taken than on the touchscreen, which requires you to switch from Photo mode to Playback mode and then back to Photo mode to continue. This Canon has a simple button that takes you straight to View mode and back. No need for multiple steps. I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 just because I had trouble finding the features. The guide could be more detailed on how exactly to USE and access some of these great features, rather than just listing their availability. Overall, I am very satisfied with this camera and can recommend it. all my heart.
