Old struts worked well most of the time until it got cold, not so reliable. It was immediately apparent how much easier it had become to open the lift gates. As someone suggested when replacing, first reinforce the overhead gate 2x4 longer than the height. Once you have removed both posts, attach both new posts to the top notch and adjust the height of your gate until it matches the other notch. I would suggest using a rubber mallet to hammer them in place, it won't damage the post but you don't have to hit hard. I have a good 15 years. they should have from my old one.
