Review on Lisle 24400 Disc Brake Spreader Tool by John Hashman

Revainrating 5 out of 5

An indispensable tool that does its job well.

I'm a professional mechanic and have been using a Lisle brake pad spreader (actually a caliper presser) for about 8 months. I was concerned after seeing a bad review of Revain here, but after searching and not finding other suitable options, I bought it. It appears to be the same unit that Matco's truck dealership sells. The quality of the device seems exceptional and so far I've been happy with it. I could see that this device could break in the wrong hands. It works great if you squeeze the grip slowly as the caliper doesn't want to move easily. If someone tries to use this on a frozen caliper or ratcheting caliper I could see it breaking from abuse - I'm not saying the other reviewer did it, I'm just surprised his device was so easy breaks down. The caliper shouldn't take a lot of force to push when using this tool, if it does then the problem is probably with the caliper. The metal it's made of seems solid enough, and it doesn't feel by any means as cheap as another reviewer would have me believe. If mine breaks today I'll definitely order another one, it's an essential tool for any mechanic or handyman. Update February 13, 2013: This tool still works great. I just helped a mate make his front brakes and while he insisted he had everything for the job (and he did) I took them with me just in case. I handed it to him when it came time to press the caliper and he gave me an odd look. At first he wanted to use his trusty C-Clip but I insisted he try. I showed them how they worked and let him try them on both calipers. At the end of the horsefly job, he asked who made them and where they could get them. It's just one of those tools that some people don't even know exist, but once you do, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. The August 28, 2015 update works great. I also bought a Lisle four piston caliper compressor and pad spreader and they all work equally well. Update February 23, 2017: It's been 5 years and this tool still works the same as the day I bought it.
