According to the instructions, the device needs to be serviced (this includes changing the filter every 2-4 weeks). Well yes, but in order not to send contaminated water vapor into your home, you have to do it almost every day! This is some nonsense! We live in the Midwest and have drinking water from Lake Michigan. There are almost no dissolved minerals in our water. However, the humidifier and related parts are covered with algae after a day of use. Our Vic's heated fogger (which we replaced) had none of these shortcomings (weekly cleaning was more than enough). This device is a pain and more importantly, the instructions (which are used in Chicago) are untrue and misleading. You'll need to clean this humidifier at least every other day (and possibly daily), which requires a complete teardown, and spray the parts with a solution of chlorine bleach and water to kill the algae (which appear red on the unit's surface). If you want minimal device maintenance, don't buy this humidifier. Try to find a warm mist humidifier that will boil water and direct steam into your home (leaving you with a weekly descaling job that takes about 6-7 hours with regular white vinegar (almost all of the soaking time), which is also tedious is, but at least you don't have to do it every day!
