Excellent kit, could do with some improvement

I bought this kit three years ago. This is my only engine mod. I wanted something that would pull my Z from 5000 rpm to the red line because it seems to "choke" with an inconsistent power curve. I chose K&N because I saw cheap lame kits and also kits with metal tubes. K&N uses a polymer tube to keep heat out and offers the best sound and performance in my opinion. When I put this piece on, I noticed a difference. Great sound, especially when shifting gears on the track. With every step on the gas you can hear him sucking air. *sssssssst*! 4 stars for instructions and I find the heat shield about 1/2 inch larger than all directions. As for the instructions, they just suck for such a great kit. Must be in colour, clear photos etc. What you will receive is basically a folded copy that looks like it was taken from a genuine Xerox machine. I repeated each step twice and overlooked that steps 17-18 require you to take a longer hose clamp and wrap it around the seat bracket on the engine block. Photo shown but not written. From here the whole block sagged and the heat shield rubbed against the main coolant. It could have hurt a lot more. It's not K&N's fault, it's my fault for installing it, but it was very easy to miss. I called them and they corrected me when I showed them pictures of the setup. Replaced the line for about $100, learned the lesson and have been using the kit with no problems ever since. Heat shield, it's so close to very important components that it won't make contact once properly installed, but if you have to take it off and put it back on frequently (for almost every engine run) MAKE SURE YOU GET IT RIGHT ATTACH . Your local mechanic may not know how it should sit, so check it out from time to time. This is actually in the instructions - check the installation every 3-6 months. Note. If you disconnect the battery during installation, you may need to perform an idle O2 reset on Z. Not sure how many cars this will fit, but on Z I had to do it. The engine computer will compensate for this, but if you reset the idle position during installation you will need to reset it. Performance: 5 stars (I would give more. for a recording, the increase is ridiculous) Installation: 5 stars (was straightforward and easy despite my incompetence) Instructions: 2 stars (poorly constructed and written) Workmanship: 5 stars (first class level)
