This was a total impulse purchase for me. It is different from solar lights which have some built in battery to store solar energy and then turn on at night. This has no solar energy storage. It works in direct sunlight only. When a cloud comes, it will stop. When the sun comes out again, it will start working again. It wasn't overly clear what the plastic tubes were for. Essentially these hold the unit in place. W/o them, the unit will float around and when it hits the side of the bowl/fountain, it sprays the water outside of the bowl and will eventually drain the bowl. It is important to find the right container for this
