Review on Samsung BD F5700 Wi Fi Blu Ray Player by Marcus Barlow

Revainrating 1 out of 5

Served 2.5 years. Cannot work on a "hidden " Wi-Fi network; good as a DVD/Blu-ray player

I'm editing this review because I've got life to add now. This car lived a little less than 2.5 years. I have an old Sony DVD player that has been working great since the late 1990's. The disappointing performance (lifetime + issues mentioned below) makes me not buy another Samsung in the future. Used it yesterday. Today neither the menu nor the picture are simply deleted. Checked our inputs and outputs, checked the hard drives, everything works fine. The power turned him inside out. Nothing. Just finished. Some relief as I hope we now have a better Blu-ray player. [Original Review] Works normally as a DVD player. Unfortunately, when we finally got around to trying out the networking capabilities, we were very disappointed. We were just about to replace our Roku with this device. Our Wi-Fi network is heavily encrypted and our network name is "hidden" to improve security; If you cannot see the network, you will find it difficult to hack. All devices used in our house (including Roku) can work with a hidden network; This Blu-ray player CANNOT. We entered our hidden network name (all other devices will remember it and detect the network). There were a lot of false starts when setting it up (at first the hidden network seemed to be visible but we didn't have enough space to enter the password so we had to change our network password and change it on all our devices to the point of failing to connect anyway ) and had to briefly unhide the network so he could see it and connect properly. In the end it worked. Hidden the net again. Works normally. Watch Netflix in the evening. Turn off the DVD player. Turned it back on. He completely forgot all the information about our network. I had to make the network visible again and enter all the name and password information (which takes an unreasonably long time, by the way. Our other devices don't have this problem either). Started again. Did a little test. Of course, turn off the DVD player and it will completely forget about all our hidden network information. No way am I spending 15 minutes re-entering all of this information every time I turn the Blu-ray player back on. Our previous setup was point and click and it was very fast. Let's get back to that. We have a secure network for a reason. The error of buying this Blu-ray player is not a reason to lower our security. We keep Roku and regret this purchase. To us, it's just a Blu-ray player with superfluous and useless main menus. Absolute shame. But our mistake is that we didn't test all the features in a reasonable amount of time. If you don't care too much about network security, then this is probably a good buy. However, if you are using hidden networks, go ahead. this is not the right player for you.

Pros
  • Satisfied so far
Cons
  • Almost OK
