Originally we wanted to use copper caps for the rods. but we painted our dock medium gray and the copper didn't look right. Also, the only way to attach them was to use structural glue. Natural aluminum goes well with the gray paint finish and aluminum railing system. The lids are attached with two screws, which I think is a stronger bond than glue.
