It will work, but modification may be required

I needed a filter for an old Craftsman vacuum cleaner. This is an old school black plastic 8 gallon version, probably bought in the early 90's, noisy like everyone else but still like a champ. The model number is 113.177011 and has probably gone through several iterations since my purchase. I found this filter model and thought it would be a direct replacement. To an extent it is, and required some modifications to properly fit my model. This doesn't mean you'll have the same problems, but it's just something to be aware of. Basically the design is like this. As soon as you detach the head unit and turn it upside down, there is a long column of threads in the middle. In my case, a nut in the shape of a red flag was screwed onto the frame. This nut pressed the plate against the filter and held it in place. I unscrewed the red flag nut, removed the plate and filter. I have included a construction diagram taken from the Craftsman box on the web. This new filter is designed to fit this threaded post as well, but differs in that the plate is integrated into the design. The plate also has a raised threaded area that hides some of the threads on the post. A normal round nut was included in the scope of delivery, which should screw the filter and hold it in the foil. Tried to post but to no avail. I don't think the threaded rod is extended far enough to do this. Then I tried the original red flag nut and while it worked I had to press down on the filter and could only do 1 or 1.5 turns. I thought about it for a moment, and since I didn't want to tear the threads off, I cut off this protruding thread area on the plate the next day. I used wire cutters and a razor blade and cut it on the same level as the board. It doesn't have to be perfect. After that, the red flag nut fitted perfectly and I was back in business. I kept the old plaque in case the design changes again.
