Great when it behaves

It delivers consistent results in half the time, settles quickly and gives me confidence it's doing a good job. In cases where I've compared it to other methods (more on that in the next paragraph), it's been a good fit. The calibration was pretty decent to begin with, but I did a 2-point calibration in pH 4 and pH 7 buffers anyway, just to be sure. However, the other half of the time this thing randomly jumps around the entire pH range from 0 to 14. I haven't proven it to myself yet, but it's possible that all of these weird happenings were influenced by my phone that I'm in had in my pocket. pH meters have to be incredibly sensitive because the resistance of the sensor cell is around 10 billion ohms. It's like the most sensitive voltmeter you've ever seen. They're not easy to make, and to be honest this thing is pretty much at the bottom of the price range. From now on I will leave my phone somewhere else when using the meter. I use it in both our hot tubs (where the ORP feature is a great way to ensure I'm getting enough but not too much shock treatment in the water) and our fish pond. Of course, it needs to be rinsed well with clean water after each use, and be sure to use a storage solution (I use Hanna 70300M) when putting it away. This keeps the pH lamp and reference wick in good condition for years to come. You don't have to be a chemist (I'm the only one) to get good results (at least sometimes), you just have to follow the instructions.
