This tool works well when used for its intended purpose AND the log is properly secured. I recommend looking up YouTube for various uses for jackknives and cultivators first - I sharpened them right out of the box like every cutting tool I've ever bought. about the 4th jab into the bark - it stuck and stabilized well. It's curved to work under the bark and clean around the trunk, not far. A drawknife is the best tool for working on long sections of thinner bark. However, it works well to cut long sections when the turn goes all the way to the bark and NOT up like a ski. The notch helps this tool work most efficiently.
