Like many others, I was hoping that Canon would make a replacement version for the original 24-105 for a while. Having owned this lens and used it on lower resolution cameras for many years I found it to be a good all round event lens and I really liked the focal range. It wasn't as sharp as my 24-70 2.8 II, but I really enjoyed getting the extra focus on the long end and IS. A new lens (this item) arrived last week and I was shooting with it on my 5D MkIV and wanted to test the IS capabilities and overall sharpness as I will be using it primarily hand held. I was expecting it to be a bit sharper, better edge lighting and more effective image stabilization and I'm very happy to report that I'm very happy with this new lens in every way. I think this is a worthy improvement in every way, and the bonus is that the lens zooms in and out smoothly for better video compared to the V1. All in all it is what I was hoping for and I am very satisfied and happy that it finally arrived. (I understand that the earthquake in Japan many months ago slowed production of some products and caused a delay.) I think for the money this is excellent value and overall a great lens.
