Customer service (cloud support) helped quickly and in a hurry! Turns out I was having problems (see below) because I was using a 1/4" jack in my interface instead of an XLR male. If like me you're not very hardware savvy then you have to do this. Now my $60 interface and $20 dynamic mic can capture audio from a convenient few feet away (before, I basically had to have a mic to capture audio). My problem was solved by a helpful customer service: I recently bought a Cloudlifter CL1 to amplify the sound of a cheap dynamic microphone (SAMSUNG Q2U). It looks like the signal from the mic is not going to the cloud lift. Increasing the gain on my interface gives me an audible hiss as I would expect from the gain but no signal is detected from the mic. If I plug the mic directly into the interface, I still get faint audio from the mic. Tried another cheap dynamic mic and some male to female XLR cables. The problem has not been resolved. Should I attribute this to a defective product or is it a simple issue - is there some sort of switch here that I'm not aware of? It looks like a plug and play item. I really wanted to love this because it looks like a solid build and if it did what I need I would be very happy with the product but alas. For now it's a dud and I may have to return it.
