Loud popping/clicking - VERY LOUD!

I have 5 of these and they were excellent. I'm sure the good reviews are based on the original design. The new units come with a cheap loud (really loud) ratchet which is very annoying and can be heard every time someone pulls towels off a roll in the kitchen in every room in my 3 bedroom house! I called the manufacturer/distributor and they said that this is how they will be made from now on and unfortunately there is nothing to counteract the loud cracking/clicking. I won't buy these again. Warning: they are very loud!
