I bought this device wondering if it would tear my skin to shreds. happy to say. no I have used pumice and its varieties for many years. The label on the packaging warns against using it on its side as it may cause injury. I'm still not sure what they mean as I've used it up and down and side to side with no problems. The handle is strong and well shaped, making it easy to hold while showering. Oh yes, I use it in the shower, the water flows, but since it's metallic you take it out immediately when you're done.
