I use it not as a portable, but as a small player with headphones for listening to music , both for ambient noise and isolate as well as not to disturb anyone. For example, I will not go with him. I can't comment on the different playback modes (repeat, shuffle, intro or programmed tracks) as I've never used them on a player. Also note that at my age I may not be able to find a less than perfect reproduction. Comments in no particular order: - I'm quite satisfied with the sound quality. - Anti-Shock works and is needed even if you only take the player with you to look at the display. The player is incredibly sensitive to interference when the feature is disabled. I don't care that using it supposedly reduces battery life as I rarely use batteries. - Track skip buttons don't work as well as I expected. You have to be patient and not keep pressing the buttons quickly to get to the title you want. When this happens, the player just stops. - Volume control: I like its position, it's not too cluttered and it's constantly being adjusted. - The instruction manual is good, with two exceptions, which I found the hard way. I never use the hold knob (slide switch on the side) but someone else does (unbound granddaughter I believe without my knowledge). All of a sudden, the player was just showing a tiny icon that looked like an old-fashioned key. The function of the hold switch is described, but no mention is made of the display. It should be so. I found out by writing to the manufacturer. The other is that Basic Disc Play refers to pressing the OPEN button, but the player has a slide switch instead; a small bug that should be fixed in the next release. The headphones were surprisingly good when I finally tried them. I've used a couple of Bose phones. I just tried a pair of Etymotic headphones which really isolate ambient noise and sound great. However, many portable devices or components with a headphone output cannot control them. (I've had a very good headphone amp, about the size of a pack of cigarettes, for a long time to use the Etymotics.) This player has enough power to drive them well. Battery compartment, although I hardly use it. , is on the back so it's very easy to change the batteries unlike any other portable device I've seen. The ability to play damaged CDs came as a big surprise. I started tracking which CDs in my collection were damaged and comparing the ability of different devices to play them (on two so far). An expensive, almost new component block throttles on both, but not on Califon! (This new unit is now in store with a warranty. The technician wasn't optimistic, but he might be able to fix it.)
