The gears were nice and clean and the old EGR seemed to be working.

A google search revealed that the EGR valve may be fine but the passages are likely clogged. An hour to get to the valve so I figured one should be ready. The gears were nice and clean and the old EGR seemed to work, but I swapped it out anyway. No service engine will catch fire that quickly. Hooray! Why? I do not know, but the result!
