The cable works great as an OBD scanner. The software is where the problem lies. This comes with an older version of VCDS designed to work with third party cables like the one that comes with it. This is not a fully registered version that allows you to adjust and drag all gauge blocks, but a trial version. Also, even in compatibility mode, I couldn't get the software to work on either Windows 10 or Windows 7, it just crashed on several computers I tried. I was able to start a Windows XP virtual machine and was able to get it running without any problems. The newer full version of VCDS no longer supports 3rd party cables (except VCDS-LITE) and you still need to register it to get other useful features than reading trouble codes. Depending on what you want to do, the VCDS lite and the included one do not support the 115 gauge needed to troubleshoot boost issues. In short, the cable can still be used with other OBD reading software, which is GREAT as the software that comes with it isn't very helpful. I'd say if you want a USB ODB cable it's a good buy but if you're looking for full vag com functionality then go for the vcds version or try OBDevelen.
